Getting ready.

23:20 May 31 2008
Times Read: 709

I started getting ready for my trip to Germany next week. We went out last night and i bought some new clothes...A couple pair of pants, some dress shirts, a few ties etc. Things are much more formal in business in Europe. No one takes you seriously unless you are wearing a jacket and tie. Come to think of it, the last time I bought ties and dress shirts was when I last went to europe.

I also headed down to the basement and dug out by power converter so that I can charge my laptop, camera and phone while I'm there.

I started packing already as I am always worried that I will forget something!

Business is becoming more informal in the UK but as mainland Europe is definitely more formal. Have fun :-)

Grill - O - Rama

01:01 May 27 2008
Times Read: 713

I mentioned before that the kids got me a new grill this weekend. I put it to good use over the long holiday!

On Saturday night I grilled up some Bratwurst, first simmered them in stock and sliced onions. Seved with chips (or "crisps" as STABB would insist), potato salad and macaroni salad.

Sunday night we had grilled chicken Caeser Salad. I grilled off Italian Bread slices to go under the salad and also grilled the chicken. In the interest of full disclosure, Gina did the marinade for the chicken and the washing and tearing of the Romain. I made the dressing and assembled the salads on the plates.

Today We had smoked BBQ spare ribs. I dry rubbed the racks of ribs and then smoked them over hickory for 2 hours, then grilled them off, basting with Gina's amazing BBQ sauce. We had grill-roasted potatos and onions (in a foil wrap) and corn-on-the-cob. Gina made a great desert of Angel food cake with stawberries and fresh whipped cream.

To all those who I make hungry...You should have stopped by - Gina's friend Eli did, and there was still plenty for a few others!

Drac Ball

Times Read: 733

We had a very good time at the Drac Ball last night. For the first time ever we got there and the line to get in was actually moving and we ended up walking right in.

We didn't run into anyone we know, except the promoter and a girl who works for him, but we did meet and chat with some very nice folks. A bunch of very intersting outfits including some types we rarely see. There were 2 very well done Gothic Lolita outfits.

The first band, Tearwave, was very good. They are from the Buffalo New York area. The second band, Lost Signal, sadly, was not very good. The actual "music" was good and well played but the vocalist was weak. You win some and you lose some!

Overall had a great time and avoided the HBO crew taping the Vampire Lifestyle feature.

As promised, a few photos from the evening.

Gina and I on our way out.

A few pics of Gina at the event.

Making Progress..

I skipped out of work early yesterday - about 3:30...Sad thing is, I think I was the last salaried person to leave for the day...My car was all lonely in the parking lot when I walked out!

Got home, put together the new lawnmower (David hit something with the old one and bent the crankshaft) and cut the back lawn. Left the side and front for David, which he did as soon as he got home from school. Brought the new grill outside adn "seasoned" it. by coating the entire interior with oil and burning charcoal at 25o F for 4 hours.

This morning we cleaned out the garage. We had empied the contents of our storage unit in there when we moved and never got around to organizing it. Now we have only what belongs in the garage and some stuff we are going to give to Goodwill in the garage. I hope to be able to park a car in there by Monday afternoon!

I'm cooking dinner on the grill right now, Brats simmering in onions and stock for a while before I grill them off. Sitting at the patio table, typing on the laptop and enjoying a Wheat Beer. Life is good!

Tonight Gina and I are heading down to Philly for the Memorial Day version of Dracula's Ball. I can't recall the bands playing. Hopefully we will run into some fellow VR folks and some freinds from the Philly Goth scene. I have no idea what Gina is planning to wear. I think I will wear my kilt and black "Pirate" shirt. I will try to get some photos to post.

We usually get home around 2:00AM and I have to teach Sunday School this week. 8:00AM is going to come around mighty quick!

Oh, BTW Mr Pond Guy. Thanks to your comment Gina insists I start digging for the pond! Problem is she wants it under our Japanese Maple Tree...And she won't listen to me about how YOU said that was a bad idea. I hope I can find some cheap airfares to bring in my "Pond Guy" over from the UK for weekly cleanings!

Hmmm yup you had better listen to your pond guy, he's speaking sense ... :D

You know how grass can grow through roads, well a tree roots seeking out the cool damp sides of your pond under the earth won't be stopped by a few mm of fibreglass - the first sign will be that you need to top it up less each week (as the internal volume shrinks) then you will notice the sides bulging inwards ... its too late by then, then you will notice that the pond is empty, a big hole in the side or base, and the tree is dead from overwatering

Of course, if that is what Gina really wants you can build and under ground barrier of concrete blocks to keep the roots in check (try not to kill the tree while you're doing it). Watch for the redirected roots lifting the tree base-land above the pond level, that can cause real problems with rain washing crud off the ground into your pond ... of course you can dig a ditch around your pond, about 20cm deep and wide, and fill it with little rocks - that will stop the pond getting polluted by anything washing in; the rocks are easily hidden under the lip of the pre-formed pond or by planting pretty bushy plants right up to it

In the short term you can enjoy trying to scopp the tree's leaves off the pond surface before they sink, decay and release methane, killing the fish with the pollutions and clogging your pond with the slimy mat on the bottom .... or you can attach a surface skimmer to your pump and anchor it, so floating leaves are drawn into the skimmer's basket which just needs to be emptied every day

Seee, if Gina reads this, its not a simple matter of digging a hole ... poor Keith has got to do a lot of work to make it work ... I mean that would take us maybe two days !

Hope that helps

*hides*

Last autum I through away our old grill and planned on getting a new one this spring. Well, memorial day weekend is here and I have been scouring the ad circulars for grills.

Apparently, my daughter Chrissy and her boyfriend Liam were planning on getting me a new grill for my birthday. Well I will be in Dusseldorf on my brithday and they were rightly concerned that I would go out and buy a grill this weekend.

So, when I walked in the house this evening ther, in the dining room was a brand new grill..Already assembled and ready to go.

We will certainly be "Grillin' and Chilin'" over this long weekend!

OOOH Another trip.

01:24 May 16 2008
Times Read: 795

On Monday morning my boss walks into my office and kind of looks at me sheepishly. He clears his throat and say "Err, do you want to go to Drupa?"

So, some explaination is in order. Drupa is the largest trade show / exhibition in the printing industry. It is held at the end of May / beginning of June every four years in Dusseldorf, Germany. I brought the impending approach of this show to the attention of our managment a year ago, as hotels are hard to come by for this time. (Last time we ended up renting 2 room in some lady named Ursula's apartment). Management decided then that no one needed to go this time. Last week, while I was in Minnesota, the CEO decided that someone better go or we will look like weinies campared to our sister companies in Europe, who send half the technical staff. So I was chosen along with another Technical guy from the Printing / Laminating group.

So now we are rushing to make arrangements. We got round trip fights from Newark to Dusseldorf (usually we fly into Munich and take a short connecting flight to Dusseldorf) and we found 2 rooms in a hotel in Essen, about 15 miles North East of Dusseldorf.

We are now making "appointments" with various vendors and potential vendors. - This translates to eating and drinking binges each night.

I HATE the late notice, but I am very excited to spend a week in Europe!

The rest of the weekend

We got out to Shippensburg at about 7:30 PM and went to check in at our hotel. Gina, Dave and I were staying at the hotel, as well as our friends Connie and Harry. Chrissy was going to be spending the nights with her sister. We called Allie and she and Zack were to meet us a Applebee’s for dinner. We got to Applebee’s and the two of them got there ahead of us and put names in for a table. We had about a ½ hour wait and then got seated. We had a nice dinner together and Chrissy left with them to return to school while Dave, Gina and I headed to the hotel for the night.

We woke up Saturday morning to it raining fairly heavily outside. We checked the University website and graduation had been split in half and moved inside. Luckily Allie’s College was set for the morning session. Dave, Gina and I met Connie and Harry downstairs for breakfast and then we headed over to the school, met Chrissy at the field house and went in to fight the crowd to find seats. The place was packed!

The graduation procession started right on time. The professors and graduates processed in and took their seats. The keynote speaker was U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Dirk Kempthorne. He gave an excellent, non political and very motivational speech to the Graduates. After his address the University President declared the students “Graduates” and the calling of names and handing out of diploma cases began.

The School of Business went first then the College of Education and Human Services, from which Allie received her degree. There were quite a few graduates who had achieved Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude and Cum Laude. In addition a handful of students were in the ROTC program and graduated as 2nd Lieutenants in the Army, all were given a big round of applause for their dedication. Eventually they got through all 500 Graduates and the ceremony ended!

Allie and Zack did not want a big party or much fuss of any kind. We all headed to Zack’s apartment along with Zack’s parents (who we were meeting for the first time) for Pizza. We hung out there for several hours, getting to know Zack’s family. The kids then kind of “dismissed” us old folks so we headed back to the hotel.

The second part of our mission was then set to begin. We had to tow home my poor Neon that Allie blew up back in December. Harry and I dropped the ladies off at the hotel and we proceeded (with David tagging along) to go pick up the trailer from U-Haul and go get the car. We spent quite a while at the U-Haul place as there was only one guy working there. I had reserved a 2 wheel car dolly (Where the from wheels of the car being towed are on the dolly, and the rear wheels are on the road), but they didn’t have one of those, so we ended up with a full trailer, for the lower cost, which worked out great. The U-haul guy hooked the trailer up to Harry’s truck and we drove off to get the car loaded.

My poor little Neon had been sitting in a parking spot since December. I went to try to start it, but of course the battery was dead. I did see, however, that the car was loaded to the roof with stuff. Allie decided that it would be easier to load up the car with all of the crap she didn’t want than to go through the process of asking us to bring it home! Well, we got the pushed out of the parking spot and jump started, with a horrible sound from the bad rod bearings and clouds of blue smoke and started to drive it onto the trailer. Just as I got the back wheels ready to go from the ramp to the trailer the trailer came unhitched from the truck! The U-Haul guy had neglected to tighten the hitch to the ball. It took Harry and David standing on the tongue of the trailer to get it back together. We finally got the trailer hooked back up, the car on the trailer and the car strapped and chained to the trailer and headed back to the hotel. Halfway there, David’s cell phone rings, it was Gina wondering A) Where we were as it was taking a long time and B) Why I didn’t answer my cell phone. This caused me to realize that I had no idea where my cell phone was! Luckily when we got to the hotel I opened the door to the Neon and it was on the floor!

We disconnected the trailer, went inside to get washed up and the 5 of us headed out to dinner. We went to a Fudruckers, which was actually quite good. Headed back to the hotel, I watched the end of the NASCAR race and went to sleep.

We got up early the next morning, met the kids at Perkin’s for Mother’s Day breakfast and then hit the road home. The trip home was fairly mundane. When we got home we unloaded the poor Neon into our driveway and Harry and I went to return the trailer. We were directed by the U-Haul phone return hotline to return it to a place only around 3 blocks away, that neither of us had heard of before. It turned out to be a Bangladeshi convenience store. Only the daughter of the owner spoke English and she had no idea what she was doing with the U-Haul computer. She had to call them to help her with the return, all the while bitching out her Father, who was not there and usually handled the U-Haul stuff. It took about 45 minutes all the while I was getting incredibly hungry due to the amazing aromas from whatever the Lady behind the counter was cooking.

We eventually got done and I finally got to go home and sit down for the first time in a week. Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home!

I'll Try Again...

02:52 May 14 2008
Times Read: 823

I tried writing this yesterday, but I did it in the “write in journal” thing, rather than off line and I got logged off before I was done so it went “poof”. Then I got pissed at myself so didn’t have the patience to type it over again. I’m not pissed off now, so here goes.

Last week in Minneapolis ended fairly well. We drove our co-worker who had a commitment on Friday to the airport on lunch break, and just made it back in time for the “Short Course on Winding Mechanics” to begin. That was the best session of the entire week and was well worth the trip.

Thursday night we went out to a campus watering hole for dinner, it was actually quite good! I had a blackened Mahi-Mahi sandwich and a few pints of a nice local beer. Headed up to the room early, got packed and headed to sleep. Got up at 7:00 and headed off to the airport for the flight home.

Drove to the airport, stopping to put 3 gallons of gas in the rental car to avoid the $4.85 / gal charge the rental company would charge if it wasn’t “full, full”. Turned in the car but the portable check-in-o-matic unit was out of paper so I had to go to the desk in the terminal to get a receipt. Made it to a kiosk to check in for my flight and then headed to the security line.

It seems to me that the airline employees and TSA agents in the smaller cities have a feeling of self importance much greater than that in a “real” city. The North West person “overseeing” the security line decided my carry on bag was ‘too big” and I had to check it. I have carried the same damned bag for several years…It has NEVER not fit in an overhead and no one had ever questioned it before. But THIS guy was not going to let any East Coast City Boy carry a “too big” bag on HIS plane, Gosh Darn it! So I got out of the line, went and checked my bag, and then got back in the end of the Security line again.

Fridays are the worst day to fly as all of the leisure travel “rookies” are out clogging up the system. I had 3 of these fools in front of me in the security line. Fool #1 – This old guy had several different small bottles of “stuff” randomly strewn in his bag…Plus some “bladed weapons”. He did not have his liquid items separate and in a clear 1 qt bag, as the BIG sign next to the table with the pile of 1 qt. bags at the beginning of the security line explained. So he tied up the line for five minutes re-arranging his liquids, and also had a nail file, a box cutter and a “Buck” knife confiscated! Fool #2 – This dude placed his bag on the inspection belt, AND had his “liquids” separated BUT he tried to go through the metal detector with his shoes on, his jacket on and his cell phone in his pocket. He tied up the line, going through, setting off the metal detector, putting stuff on the belt etc. And he totally pissed off the TSA guy at the metal detector. Fool #3 – The guy puts his bag on the belt, has his little bag-o-liquids, puts his shoes through the machine…So far, so good. As his stuff hits the X-Ray machine, however, there are the obvious signs of an issue. The belt stops, backs up, goes forward, stops, backs up another TSA agent joins the first looking at the screen, they point at the screen. The 2nd TSA guy goes to the exit of the machine and holds this guys bag. The TSA agent asks the guy “Do you have any liquids in this bag”. The guy, instead of answering, goes to grab and open the bag…BAD idea! The TSA agent grabs his hands and says “Sir, DO NOT touch the bag!”. “DO YOU HAVE ANY LIQUIDS IN THE BAG?” The guy says “No, sir”. The TSA guy opens he bag and pulls out 3 1 liter bottles of “Propel” Energy drink…..Idiots!

So, I finally make it through security, meet up with my co-worker and we stop for breakfast before heading to the gate. We get to the gate and miracle of miracles, our plane is there and boarding starts on time. I had a second miracle occur, as there was no one in the seat next to me for the flight! This is the first time in several years that this has happened to me! We have a good, if bumpy flight with only a 20 min. “ATC hold” before landing in Philly.

We headed down to baggage claim, and our bags actually showed up! I called Gina and she swung over from the “cell phone lot” and picked me up. We had a fairly quick ride home (also quite rare). I ran in the house, took the dirty clothes out of may bag, put clean clothes in, and we got in the car to drive to Shippensburg, PA for our daughter Allie’s graduation on Saturday morning.

I can tell you that by the time we got to Shippensburg, my ass was tired of sitting.

I’ll get to the weekend’s events on the next entry!

Minnesota

So here I am at the Radisson Hotel right on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The wireless internet is a tad slow, but otherwise I can't complain.

Yesterday I flew from PHL to MSP and actually had no delays or hicups of any kind. (Well, except for the dude who got all sweaty and passed out on the plane...Luckily he wasn't sitting near me and there was a cardiologist on board who checked him out and figured it was just a panic attack). As a bonus I met Trevor Laws who was on the flight, in coach with the rest of us poor slobs. He is a new Rookie Defensive End for the Philadelphia Eagles, just graduating from Notre Dame. He was VERY nice and seamed to be a together kid. He admitted to being a bit overwhelmed at the prospect of playing NFL football, particularly for the Eagles (who's fans are noatably fickle). I think he will do just fine, and has the right attitude to avoid the pitfalls many young players encounter.

Today I sat through 8 hours of lectures ranging from "Advances in Laser Processing of Flexible Packaging Materials" to "Solutions for Winding Multi-Layer and Pattern Webs". Interupped only by a few 10 min breaks and an hour for lunch. Afterwards there was a "Vendor sponsored Reception and Table Top Exhibition" . This translates to 2 hours of open bar and Hours deVours while people try to sell you stuff!

Just getting ready to head out to dinner with the other 2 guys from my company I am here with. It's raining like an S.O.B., so we may just go to the Appleby's connected to the Hotel.

I am traveling to Minnesota tomorrow to attend a conference. I will be returning Friday afternoon. Gina will pick me up at the airport and then we have to drive 3 hours to Allie's school where she graduates on Saturday. I really feel that I am way too young to have a kid graduating from college! She is still looking for a job for the fall, but she has a good shot in several school districts in the area she wants to work.

I found out this past Friday that I am likely going to a Trade show in Dusseldorf either the last week of May or the first week of June. This will be for a week, and will likely include a day or two at the "home office" of the company I work for in Milano. It's really great to be able to go to this, but I would have prefered a bit more notice!
